supercult: Your E.P. comes out ("drops") on March
21st. What can we expect from it?
stephen howard: 5 songs. A rocker, a ballad, a space
rocker, a dance rocker, and a very beautiful yet often very distorted
cover of the song If You Go Away. We wrote most of the songs on the
e.p. in our first rehearsal. It's kind of a snapshot of a band right at
it's formation. It should be cool to compare it to our future releases
and see how the band changed from those first rehearsals.
sc: This is a multi part question. An Ice
Wizard and a Fire Wizard get into a fight. Who do you think will win?
sh: Ice wizard if it's a quick fight. If the
ice wizard doesn't finish off the fire wizard quick though, then fire
wizard wins.
sc: The next part you'll need to think about
pretty hard. The Ice Wizard has an apprentice who is a young dragon. As
you know, younger dragons are very mischievous. Do you think the
apprentice will be an asset in the fight, or will his mischievous
nature get in the way and cost the Ice Wizard a victory?
sh: Total help. Now he's got ice and a fire
breathing dragon. Ice and fire. He can't lose.
sc: You've all been in a lot of different
bands. Are you finally happy with Ambulette? Who will be the first to
quit the band?
sh: I think we are all happy with the band.
So far I think it's been really great. Due to the business end of
things, it's kind of moved slow at times. I think we're all ready to
really do this thing full on. Ryan will be the first to quit the band.
He probably already has.
sc: Do you sleep on your back or your
stomach?
sh: I sleep on my stomach. I think most of
the band ends up on their stomach. Matt may sleep on his back a lot.
The real question is who tries to spoon and play footsie all night. I
think that's Matt as well.
sc: Who will like your music?
sh: Well, our parents like it and they're
old. We also have lots of kids at our shows. So our fan base right now
is like 15 through 65. There is a decent dip between the ages of 25 and
60 though. Right now our songwriting is really diverse. We have some
super ambient stuff that the Denali fans might like. We have a bunch of
straight up pop/rock songs that our record label might like. We have
some dance songs that dancers might like. There's a little bit for
everybody.
sc: How far do you think Maura would get on
American Idol?
sh: I've never watched it so I might not be
the best to answer this but I think she'd get pretty far. Maybe she'd
even win. When she sings by herself, she likes to go "and a wooo woo
woo." And she waves her finger a lot when she sings that. I think that
at least gets you into the second round.
sc: She has power in her voice, but it sounds
very fragile at the same time. Do you try to repeat that theme
sonically, or play against it?
sh: She's been singing with a lot more power
lately. I think partially because she enjoys it and partially out of
necessity to sing over the band. She often switches voices in the
middle of songs depending on the passage. Her different voices and her
range of singing just give us that many more options when writing
songs. There's not a style from jazz to hard rock to ambient that she
couldn't sing. So she usually decides how exactly to sing a song after
we've been working on it for a bit. Some songs need so be belted out
while some need to be whispered.
