he may be dead, but he taught us to be skeptical, so maybe he is
not dead,
at least on some level in our collective conscious. He also taught
us to question the invisible dragon that lives in our garage; that
arguments from authority carry little weight; to keep an open mind
and be creative while maintaining a healthy dose of skepticism;
that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
h e told us "the idea that god is an oversized white male with
a flowing beard, who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every
sparrow is ludicrous. but if by 'god,' one means the set of physical
laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a god.
this god is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense
to pray to the law of gravity"
h e helped place the only man-made object to ever leave our solar
system on its course. He helped put vikings
on mars. he monitored the skies for signs of other intelligence
in the universe. he created the molecules of life in a jar. he told
us that we are all made from the stuff of stars and may one day
return to the stars. he was mr. x. he was worried about us and our
nuclear weapons. He was worried about global warming. He worried
because he wanted us to be able to grow up and perhaps one day meet
our distant distant cousins in the solar systems billions and billions
of light years away from us.
